BPW Connection | November 2018

Please join us on November 14th for the November Luncheon!

We are so excited about this month's speakers!
Capt. Lee Ann Holroyd and Patricia J. Thompson from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, will speak to us about security in our schools. Don't miss this opportunity to meet these strong woman who are making a difference in our community.
And, we're trying something new this month.  It's a Chinese Raffle!  Please bring a new item to be raffled, and plan to buy raffle tickets so you can bid on the item(s) of your choice. Proceeds will benefit our Development Series.  It will be fun so help us out and play along!
Thank you to MarineMax for sponsoring this month's luncheon!

CHINESE AUCTION ITEMS NEEDED
During our November 14 luncheon we have a Chinese Auction and we are asking all attendees to bring to the luncheon one or more fun (new) items we can auction off. It could be a gift certificate to your business, a product you sell, or that shirt or bag in your closet with the tag still on it. The more items, the more chance of winning we have.
Tickets sold for the auction during the luncheon: 3 for $5, 10 for $10 or 30 for $20.

Ilja Chapman, President
November is the month that gratitude is celebrated annually over roasted turkey. Being raised in the Netherlands, I had to get used to Thanksgiving as I believe gratitude should be part of your everyday life. But I do appreciate the idea of getting together once a year and celebrating thankfulness and gratitude with each other.
I think we all can agree that life is easier when you have a little help along the way. It can come from family, friends or perfect strangers. Their assistance creates a feeling of gratitude and appreciation that changes your attitude and mindset which is guaranteed to do you good. I hope that within the Upper Keys BPW membership, you feel you can find that assistance and receive gratitude and appreciation for your participation.
One of our speakers this month, Lee Ann Holroyd, is a long-time member of our organization and she continues to give to the Upper Keys BPW in different ways. We are so grateful she will share her knowledge with us and show us how she has grown over the years.
There are many ways to become an active BPW member and give back. You can join a committee. We are looking to grow our local BPW membership by creating and executing a strategic marketing plan. How fun is that! Obviously, we need funds to keep the organization running and with you bringing a raffle item or buying a raffle ticket, you are giving back, too.
If you want to be part of the bigger picture, I do encourage you to consider attending the BPW/FL State Conference June 27-30, 2019, or ask about joining our local Board of Directors for the next term starting May 2019. Or maybe there is something you think would make a good addition to our organization. Let us know!
Lots of opportunities are available, and I am the first one to admit that being an active part of the Upper Keys Business & Professional Women makes me grow every day. I am so grateful for the support received as I do believe life is easier when you have a little help along the way.
Happy Thanksgiving!
With gratitude,
Ilja Chapman

   bpw|member SPOTLIGHT

Meet Ginette Hughes
I grew up in New Jersey and visited the Keys frequently through high school and college. After one really cold winter in NJ, I made the permanent move in 1985. I joined Marine Resources Development Foundation in 1986 as an administrative assistant. I helped create the MarineLab education program and expanded my role in the Foundation over the years, and in December 2017 I was named Chief Executive Officer. I strongly believe in our mission of educating children about the importance of the ocean to all of us, not just those of us that live on the coast. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to make a career out of my passion.
I love the Keys community. When my son was young, I was a coach, referee, and Regional Commissioner for our local AYSO region. I performed in several Key Players productions, including Nunsense, Little Shop of Horrors, and A Taffetas Christmas. I graduated Leadership Monroe County with Class XIII and served briefly on that Board.
I am an avid sailor, a past Commodore and Treasurer of the Upper Keys Sailing Club, and I’m currently serving as the Fleet Captain for the third time. I wanted to serve our community in other ways and meet more like-minded people, so I joined the League of Women Voters (of which I’m currently Treasurer) and the BPW. I’m committed to educating people about voting rights, political issues, and candidates so I was honored and pleased to serve on the BPW Candidate Forum committee, and I look forward to serving the BPW in other ways.
Over the years, I earned my AA from Florida Keys Community College and finished my Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Florida International University. With two dogs, a house, and hobbies ranging from gardening to yoga, I stay pretty busy!
